Why Is My Pool Pump Leaking?

Diagnose the drip before it becomes a disaster.

1. Worn Out Pump Seals

The mechanical seal is a common failure point. It separates the dry motor side from the wet pump side. Over time, it wears down due to friction, heat, or chemical exposure.

Signs to look for:

  • Water dripping where the motor connects to the pump.

  • Leak appears mainly when the pump is running.

2. Cracked Pump Housing

Pump housings (often plastic) can crack due to age, freezing temps, or heavy impacts. Even hairline cracks can lead to leaks.

Signs to look for:

  • Visible cracks in the pump body.

  • A steady leak even when the pump is off.

3. Loose or Damaged Fittings

PVC connections around your pump may loosen from vibrations, heat expansion, or shifting over time.

Signs to look for:

  • Leaks near pipe connections or unions.

  • White buildup (calcium deposits) around fittings.

4. O-Ring Failure

Dry, cracked, or flattened O-rings around the pump lid or unions will cause leaks and allow air into your system.

Signs to look for:

  • Leaks at the lid or union.

  • Air bubbles inside the pump basket or poor water flow.

5. Improper Installation or High Pressure

New installations or DIY setups can sometimes lead to leaks due to over-tightening, misalignment, or excessive system pressure.

Signs to look for:

  • Intermittent leaking or surging.

  • Leaks shortly after equipment upgrades.

What Should You Do Next?

  1. Turn off the pump immediately to avoid more damage.

  2. Visually inspect for leaks and document where you see water collecting.

  3. Call a professional to get the right diagnosis and fix it properly.
